Berkeley Castle and Butterfly House
Berkeley is a stunning mediaeval castle which has been the home of the Berkeley family since 1153.
Tall towers, deep dungeon, grand and gruesome: homely and horrid. Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn & Elizabeth I stayed here; Edward II was murdered here, Shakespeare wrote ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ for a Berkeley family wedding.
Free castle tours reveal tapestries, paintings and fine silver. Terraced gardens filled with unusual plants, tropical Butterfly House, picnic area and yurt restaurant. Groups welcomed with your own Guided Tour.
Location for the filming of The White Princess and the BBC’s adaptation of Wolf Hall & Poldark.
Family activities include Arts & Crafts, Archery, Jester Skills, Knight School, Wild Play Area, Dressing-up and much more!

Worth a look if you're in the area
Visited here and also stayed in their excellent accommodation listed on Air B and B – really is worth a visit!
A perfect day out
I just had to share with you all that I absolutely ‘loved’ my day at Berkeley Castle yesterday. The group Past-Times Living History were in attendance and I was absolutely blown away by their professionalism, depth of knowledge and camaraderie… so many people there too!! Amazing photo opportunities with not only King Henry himself but also his six wives. I heard an American couple (now based in the UK) say after they’d had their photos taken with both King and Queens that their daughter (who still lives in the United States) would be ‘beside’ herself having missed such a photo opportunity!! An ‘audience with the King’ is an absolute must .. the children loved him (plus a few adults!) not only educational but interactive too. Can’t praise this amazing group enough. Check out there Facebook page for more information. I’ll definitely be going again in the not too distant future. Make sure you check it out 👍👍
